Method #2: Using the Terminal Open Terminal. Press CTRL + ALT + T to open a terminal window. Switch User Using su Command. In the terminal, type this command: su - username. su - username. su - username. Return to the Original User (Optional). If you want to revert to your original user, type exit and press enter.
Dont worry, though; changing your username is made incredibly simple thanks to the usermod tool. This tool allows you to modify almost all aspects of your user on Ubuntu, including its username.
Use the terminal and the inbuilt command-line file editor (called nano). Open Terminal (I think CTRL Alt T works as a shortcut) Type: nano ~/.profile. Use the keypad to move your cursor to the bottom. Add export LCCOLLATE=C in a new line. Press CTRL X to exit. Press Y to confirm changes, then press ENTER to save.
Having a name that is uniquely recognisable makes it easier to identify your system on the network and when pairing Bluetooth devices. Open the Activities overview and start typing About. Press About to open the panel. Select Device Name from the list. Enter a name for your system, and confirm.
The usermod command is a powerful utility in Linux used to modify user accounts. It is used with the basic syntax, usermod [options] username . You can use it to change various user attributes like users home directory, login name, and even password expiry date.
chattr changes the file attributes on a Linux file system. The format of a symbolic mode is +-=[aAcCdDeFijPsStTu]. The operator + causes the selected attributes to be added to the existing attributes of the files; - causes them to be removed; and = causes them to be the only attributes that the files have.
The chfn command changes user fullname, office room number, office phone number, and home phone number information for a users account. This information is typically printed by finger(1) and similar programs. A normal user may only change the fields for her own account, subject to the restrictions in /etc/login. defs.
If Rename is grayed out, you do not have permission to rename the file. You should use caution with renaming such files, as renaming some protected files may cause your system to become unstable. See Set file permissions for more information.
