Formula fields are a type of data type used for calculations in Salesforce. They are read-only fields that are automatically calculated based on the logic defined in the formula. They are useful for sum calculations and can be created by clicking on the new button in the account section. For example, you can use formula fields to check tax details for annual revenue in an account.

Formula fields are special read-only fields that cannot be converted to any other data type. Likewise, you cannot convert any other field type into a formula field.
Formula fields cannot be changed to anything else. You will need to create a new custom text field to use instead. Keep in mind that the you will also have to create some configuration mechanism to put data into that new text field since the formula will no longer be evaluating.
Formulas are calculated/derived in real-time, and no data is stored for these values. As such, you cant update a formula directly.
Because formula fields are automatically calculated, they are read-only and cannot be edited from UI by users.
To change a field type Access the fields properties page. Click Change Type. (If this link does not appear on the fields properties page, then the field type cannot be changed.) From the Select a field type dropdown, choose the new field type, and then click Change Type.
The formula data type consists of three elements: Function: A function performs a specific action based on the values that you provide as input and generates a new value as output. To create a function, enter the function name followed by a set of parenthesis. For example: Abs(), Ceiling(), etc.
As with any other custom Salesforce field, formula fields are created by following just a handful of steps: Access the Object Manager from Setup navigate to the object you wish to create the Formula Field on. Click New in the Field and Relationship section of the Object you decide on. Select Formula as the field type.
