When the Canadian Red Ensign was abandoned in 1965, the government of New Brunswick decided for the first time to create a distinctive provincial flag. Two heraldic experts, Robert Pichette and Alan B. Beddoe, gave a striking new artistic interpretation to the coat of arms in the form of an armorial banner.
The arms of Brunswick consist of two gold lions on a red field, and the arms of the King contained the three gold lions of England. The gold lion in the flag therefore reflects New Brunswicks relationship both to the Duchy of Brunswick and England.
The lower part of the shield displays an ancient galley, most probably a reflection of the importance of shipbuilding and seafaring to New Brunswick in the 19th century. The galley is also based on the design of the provinces original great seal, which featured a sailing ship on water.
The New Brunswick Flag is flown at half-mast, upon the death of an important person, at provincial buildings, sites, establishments, schools, and vessels usually from the time of notification of death up to and including the day of the funeral and in ance with these rules.
Upon the shield were emblazoned the following: a black ship with white sails resting upon a blue sea, to symbolize the very extensive commerce sent forth from the State to every part of the world; a deep red plough, which signifies the natural mineral and plant resources of the Commonwealth; and three golden sheaves of
The flag of New Brunswick (French: le drapeau du Nouveau-Brunswick) consists of a golden lion passant on a red field in the upper third and a gold field defaced with a lymphad on top of blue and white wavy lines in the bottom two-thirds.
SPEM REDUXIT, meaning Hope restored.
When the present state constitution became effective in 1784, the new Legislature revised the seal, to depict a ship on stocks, with a rising sun in the background, to reflect Portsmouth having become a major shipbuilding center during the war years.
