The Evidence Log is used to document and provide a written record of each item of evidence collected during an investigation.
What is the purpose of tagging and labeling items of evidence? The primary purpose for the crime scene investigator or evidence recovery technician, in tagging and marking items of evidence is so that he/she will be able to easily identify those items at a later date.
How to fill out evidence log template: Start by entering the date and time of each piece of evidence being logged. Include a brief description of the evidence, such as its type or nature. Record the source or origin of the evidence, whether it was obtained from a person, a location, or another source.
Record and preserve evidence - To make certain that all evidence is accounted for, an inventory log is created. The descriptions recorded into the log must match the photo of the evidence taken at the scene and the description included in the crime scene report.
Evidence Logs trace the actions performed within Event Data during the creation of an Event. They should be read in conjunction with the Evidence Records. Evidence Logs are collected daily and are made up of a sequence of entries, each entry describing a particular action taken.
It includes a description of the evidence, the date and time it was collected, the source of the evidence, and any notes or observations made about the evidence. The template can be used to ensure that all evidence is documented in a consistent and organized way for easy reference.
As evidence is moved from the scene to a lab, or directly into evidence storage, or to a crime scene technicians possession, the log is updated to indicate who has each piece of evidence and why. When the case goes to court, the log is used to show the chain of custody for each item of evidence.
A typical evidence log will include the date and time the evidence was collected, the name of the investigator, the location where the evidence was collected, the reason the evidence was collected, relevant serial numbers, a description of the evidence, and the method that was used to collect the evidence.
Without a proper chain-of-custody documentation, a court may rule the evidence hopelessly compromised and inadmissible at trial.
Comprehensive record keeping: Log files serve as a detailed record of system events, user activities and application operations, which can provide a comprehensive audit trail.
