Symptoms A loud pop or a popping sensation in the knee. Severe pain and inability to continue activity. Rapid swelling. Loss of range of motion. A feeling of instability or giving way with weight bearing.
Spraining, over-stretching or tearing your anterior cruciate ligament is one of the most common knee injuries, especially if youre an athlete who plays a sport like soccer, football or basketball. The ACL provides stability to your knee, making it one of the knees most crucial ligaments.
At the time of the injury, a pop or snap can sometimes be felt or heard. The amount of pain experienced at the time of the injury is somewhat variable but can be quite severe. Typically, the person is unable to continue play or activity, and has the impression that a docHub injury has occurred.
A revision ACL reconstruction is a second surgery needed to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. ACL revision surgery is a more challenging operation for the orthopedic surgeon than a primary reconstruction.
Secondary signs include bone marrow edema (secondary to bone contusion) in more than half of ACL tears. The characteristic ACL bone bruising involves the middle third of the Lateral femoral condyle and the posterior third of the lateral tibial plateau.
In some cases, an ACL tear can appear similar to ACL degeneration, which is a more long-standing process. A partial tear of the ACL may also be misdiagnosed as a normal ACL since these injuries can be subtle in appearance. ACL tears are also often misdiagnosed as collateral ligament knee strains.
You can stretch or tear your ACL if you make a sudden movement or quick, sharp turn when youre running or jumping. Its often painful, and can make it hard to walk or put pressure on the injured leg.
Symptoms of an ACL injury This is often combined with pain and swelling. You could experience grinding feelings of your bones or kneecap. Another sign is not being able to put weight on your leg. People with a mild ACL injury might feel like their knee is unstable, or like it might give out when they are using it.
a doctor may order one or more diagnostic medical imaging tests to confirm the presence and determine the severity of an ACL injury. X-rays gives doctors a view of a persons bones. A plain x-ray of the knee is imperative if an ACL tear is suspected because of the risk of fracture.
The Lachman test is a specific clinical exam technique used to evaluate patients with a suspected anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. The test relies on proper positioning and technique and is regarded as the most sensitive and specific test for diagnosing acute ACL injuries.
