Polishing Out the Error: If the engraving is shallow, it might be possible to polish the metal surface to remove the unwanted engraving. This involves using a high-grit sandpaper or a metal polishing tool to gradually wear down the metal surface until the engraving is less noticeable or completely removed.
To remove an engraving, a jeweler has to laser off the metal in the area of the inscription to level out the texture of the metal. Once the engraving is lasered off, the ring will need to be polished to restore it to a smooth blank surface.
In soft metals like gold, any erroneous engraving can be corrected by suitable polishing.
So, is it possible? Youll be relieved to know that yes it is possible to remove laser engraving from stainless steel and other metals including gold, platinum, sterling silver and softer metals such as nickel, brass, copper and aluminium.
Removing an Engraving To remove an engraving, a jeweler has to laser the metal at the area of the engraving, blasting it to level out the texture of the metal. Once this is done, the jeweler polishes the item and restores it to a smooth, blank surface.
In case of hard metals, any mistake leaves irreversible effects. In soft metals like gold, any erroneous engraving can be corrected by suitable polishing. Any engraving related mistake in case of metal plating or rough surface may not be useful.
Removing laser engraving from metal is possible. In some cases, you can remove the engraving or etching on stainless steel as well as other metals yourself. For other, more precious metals and precious or valuable items, it is recommended that you get the engraving removed professionally.
Yes, on some materials such as wood, and most metal surfaces, on acrylic and glass too laser engraving can usually be removed. On some other materials leather in particular as well as some plated metals it wont be possible to remove the engraving.
