Generally, businesses need a new EIN when their ownership or structure has changed. Although changing the name of your business does not require you to obtain a new EIN, you may wish to visit the Business name change page to find out what actions are required if you change the name of your business.
Can you transfer an EIN to a new owner? An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a tax identification number for a business. You cannot transfer it to a new owner. In fact, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) mandates a new EIN in certain circumstances, including a new owner or change in structure.
Identify the information that has changed (LLC name, removal or addition of owners, address/location of the LLC). All other changes should be mailed to the IRS based on the state the entitys principal business, office or agency is located. The IRS will send a letter confirming receipt of your updated information.
To do this, write to the IRS at the same address where you file your tax returns and tell them you made a mistake originally, and your business name is [your business name]. Find out more about name changes here. Its a good idea to send a copy of your Articles of Organization to prove your legal business name.
A change of address with the IRS must be submitted on paper, but it doesnt take long. You can print and fill out Form 8822 from the IRS website. The second page of the form will tell you what address you should mail it to, based on your previous address.
Contrary to what you might expect, you cant actually change your EIN. Its designed to be a permanent identifier for your business (again, much like a Social Security number). However, you can either correct mistakes in an existing EIN or get a new EIN depending on your business situation.
To update the information, complete Form 8822-B, Change of Address or Responsible Party Business, and send to the address shown below that applies to you. 333 W. Pershing Rd. The IRS will send a letter confirming our receipt of the updated information.
