Clinicians can help ease patients fears by clearly explaining the next steps for potential cervical cancer evaluation or treatment. Its important to reassure them that most abnormal Pap smear results will not progress to cancer, and that abnormal cells can be treated when identified early.
An abnormal cervical screening test result means that you have changes in the cells covering the neck of your womb (cervix). These changes are not cancer. The cells often go back to normal by themselves. But in a small number of people, if not treated, these changes could develop into cancer in the future.
Other things can cause cells to look abnormal, including irritation, some infections (such as a yeast infection), growths (such as polyps in the uterus), and changes in hormones that occur during pregnancy or menopause. Although these things may make cervical cells look abnormal, they are not related to cancer.
Immediately drop the smeared slide gently into the bottle of 95% ethanol fixative or spray it before it has a chance to air dry.
Most abnormal Pap tests are caused by HPV infections. Other types of infectionsuch as those caused by bacteria, yeast, or protozoa (Trichomonas)sometimes lead to minor changes on a Pap test called atypical squamous cells.
An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
What are the different types of abnormal results? Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) Atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H) Atypical glandular cells (AGC)
