Conclusion: The majority of BCC cases are due to reactive and inflammatory processes. In patients with a previous history of CIN, BCC may be of some significance. In patients with no docHub prior cervical abnormalities, a Pap smear classified as BCC represents a reactive process.
In others, normal cells within the cervix change into abnormal cells. This transformation almost always occurs when women have human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection. The presence of certain types of HPV causes cervical cells to become altered internally and change in appearance.
During a Pap test, a tool called a speculum holds the vaginal walls apart. A sample of cells from the cervix is collected using a soft brush and a flat scraping device called a spatula (1 and 2). The cells are placed in a bottle that contains a solution to preserve them (3).
Depending on where cell changes are, they may be called cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) or cervical glandular intraepithelial neoplasia (CGIN). Cell changes arent always a problem. But its important to keep an eye on them, to check whether they may develop further and need treatment.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance is the most common abnormal finding in a Pap test. It may be a sign of infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) or other types of infection, such as a yeast infection.
Specimens from some women may also show reactive cellular changes, which is the way cervical cells appear when infection or other inflammation is around.
An abnormal cervical screening test result does not mean that you have cervical cancer. It means that cervical cell changes were found or that cells are infected with HPV. Depending on the results, you may need follow-up testing or treatment. Treatment for cervical cell changes works well.
Most abnormal Pap tests are caused by HPV infections. Other types of infectionsuch as those caused by bacteria, yeast, or protozoa (Trichomonas)sometimes lead to minor changes on a Pap test called atypical squamous cells.
