(upbeat instrumental music) - Does this look familiar to you? Have you ever thrown away hours of your life agonizing over a blank page, staring out the window, scratching your head, waiting for inspiration. then finally, an idea hits you. You start writing something, one, two, three, four pages, the beginning of your story, the first chapter, the hook thatamp;#39;s going to capture your readeramp;#39;s attention and turn you into a best selling author. You think to yourself, maybe that wasnamp;#39;t so hard after all. But then you go back and read it. (page tearing) Donamp;#39;t worry, youamp;#39;re not alone. (upbeat instrumental music) I get it. Youamp;#39;re disgusted with your first chapter. No matter how many times you tweak it and revise it, youamp;#39;re still not happy with it. Correction: You hate it. You want to burn it and dance on the ashes while you cry. But what if I told you that writing doesnamp;#39;t have to be like this? What if I told you that there is an exa

Two: When you change perspectives, you must make sure the reader knows which character shes viewing the story throughnot just sometimes, but all the time. Changing perspective at chapter or section breaks can help with this clarity, but it is possible to change within paragraphs and still maintain clarity.
Each section of your book should start on a right-hand page. The title page is always a right-hand page, the table of contents begins on a right-hand page, chapter 1 begins on a right-hand page, and so on.
Create your Numbering Format In the HOME tab, in the PARAGRAPH section, click the down arrow next to the numbered list (1-, 2-, 3-) to open the NUMBERING LIBRARY. Click on DEFINE NEW NUMBER FORMAT. For Number Style: Select One, Two, Three For Number Format, type Chapter before One Click OK.
Editing has its place Some authors like to edit what theyve written the day before to help them get in the zone. Others edit after every completed chapter. Many will recommend no edits until you have a working draft. Theres no right or wrong way to go about it.
It might not be necessary to lengthen a chapter, but you can with these. Describe the environment more. Describe the characters appearance, attitudes, thoughts, feelings, past experiences, actions, and goals. Put more conflict in the story. introduce new elements, characters, and key tools for a character.
One other method for identifying chapter breaks is to look for changes of place, time or point of view. If, for example, you go from a scene in New York City, to one in Los Angeles, for example, you might want to mark that shift by starting a new chapter.
Your chapter ends when your story moves on to a different stage, such as a different time, a different venue or moves towards different characters. Imagine it as a play, when the curtain drops for a change of scenery, that is the end of a chapter.
It is absolutely OK to write your novel out of order in the first draft. Once you get past the first draft, youll figure out what the chapter order should be to tell the best story and you will move chapters and do rewrites to get it the way that works best.
