Binary format is a way of storing files using ones and zeroes (bits) that arent intended to be read by the computer as text characters.
To update data in a binary file, we can use methods like write() or writelines(), just like in text files. However, we need to open the file in read and write mode (rb+ or wb+) instead of read mode (rb) or write mode (wb).
There have been numerous tools developed for decompilation, such as Ghidra Ghidra (2024) and IDA Pro Hex-Rays (2024) . Although these tools have the capability to revert binary code to source code in specific scenarios, they often fall short in producing code that is easily readable by humans.
Step 1: Searching for the word in the binary file. Step 2: While searching in the file, the variable pos stores the position of file pointer record then traverse(continue) reading of the record. Step 3: If the word to be searched exists then place the write pointer (to ending of the previous record) i.e. at pos.
Position the file pointer to the position you wish to overwrite using fseek(), then use fwrite() to overwrite either a byte at a time or a block held in an unsigned char array. Rinse and repeat for whichever regions of the file you wish to update.
To edit a resource Select the byte you want to edit. The Tab key moves the focus between the hexadecimal and ASCII sections of the Binary Editor. Type the new value. The value changes immediately in both the hexadecimal and ASCII sections and focus shifts to the next value in line.
An advantage of programs stored in binary is that they can be executed very quickly because they are smaller than text files with an equivalent amount of data. By default, we cannot view or edit binary files with normal programs or text editors. Instead, we need special utilities and hex editors to access binary files.
