MD files are the extensions of files created Markdown language software. Markdown is a lightweight markup language intended for one purpose, to be used to format text on the web with plain text formatting syntax.
The MD in the . md file extension (also written as . markdown) stands for Markdown documentation. Markdown is a lightweight markup language, and each MD file is written in a particular flavor of Markdown. It can be helpful to think of the different flavors as being like different dialects of one language.
The default readme file contains the repository name and some basic instructions. The file format is md, which stands for Markdown documentation.
Edit a file on a remote host Open the Remote Host tool window by choosing Tools | Deployment | Browse Remote Host or View | Tool Windows | Remote Host from the main menu. Select the required deployment server from the list. Double-click the desired file or select Edit Remote File from the context menu.
Press Ctrl+Alt+S to open the IDE settings and select Languages Frameworks | Markdown. Enable either Mermaid or PlantUML under Markdown Extensions. After IntelliJ IDEA downloads the relevant extensions, click OK to apply the changes.
Since these MD files are just plain text documents, you can open one with any text editor, like Notepad or WordPad in Windows.
