AFP is a protein made by your fetus liver. The protein passes through the placenta and into your blood. The test helps find out whether your fetus has higher than normal levels of AFP. Higher levels of AFP may mean that your fetus has an abnormality such as a neural tube defect.
Normal and Critical Findings AFP levels in men and non-pregnant women vary by age and race but typically range from 0 to 40 ng/mL. Maternal AFP levels increase during pregnancy from about the 14th week of gestation until about 32 weeks. Between 15 and 20 weeks, AFP levels typically range between 10 and 150 ng/mL.
High AFP could mean youre further along than you thought. It peaks at 28-32 weeks then starts falling. Your baby may make more AFP than normal, or you could be having twins (two babies make more AFP than one). Other things, including your race, weight, and having diabetes, can also affect your result.
The most common cause of increased maternal serum AFP is mistaken gestational age, which can be checked by ultrasonography.
Immediately after delivery, newborns typically exhibit alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) concentrations ranging from approximately 17,200 to 44,300 ng/mL [1,2]. However, prematurely born neonates tend to have an average concentration of 158,125 ng/mL [2].
If my blood test shows a high level of AFP, does that mean that my child will have spina bifida or anencephaly? No, not necessarily. There are many other reasons why the AFP level may be higher than normal in a womans blood. In fact, most women with a higher than expected level of AFP will have normal babies.
The following conditions may lead to elevated AFP levels in non-pregnant females or males: Hepatocellular cancer. Metastatic liver cancer. Liver cirrhosis. Hepatitis. Germ cell tumors. Yolk sac tumor. Ataxia-telangiectasia.
MANILA Senator Jinggoy Estrada on Wednesday announced that the Bicameral Conference approved to raise the retirement age to 57 years old of the members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
