Git Rebase Drawbacks Users cant track how and when commits were merged on the target branch. Rebase wont work with pull requests since you cant see minor changes someone else made. Rebase makes you resolve conflicts in the order they were created to continue the rebase.
To summarise, we can use Git Rebase, when we are working on branches, which cannot be seen by other developers. And we use Git Merge when the target and source branch can be viewed by other developers.
Open a Pull Request This is a formal request for your commit to be reviewed by another developer. Code Review A developer agrees to perform a code review on your commit, which may be done formally or informally. If approved, your commit takes a step forward (to #5 or #6 depending on your teams process).
It is best practice to always rebase your local commits when you pull before pushing them. As nobody knows your commits yet, nobody will be confused when they are rebased but the additional commit of a merge would be unnecessarily confusing.
NOTE: You can not not approve your own pull requests, so if you are working on the repository by yourself you will need to bypass the review restrictions by just clicking Merge pull request without submitting a review.
Use rebase whenever you want to add changes of a base branch back to a branched out branch. Typically, you do this in feature branches whenever theres a change in the main branch.
Once youve got the approvals you need (in this case just one!), you can merge. From the pull request, click Merge. And thats it! If you want to see what it looks like when your branch merges with the main branch, click Commits to see the commit tree.
If you want to see the history completely same as it happened, you should use merge. Merge preserves history whereas rebase rewrites it . Rebasing is better to streamline a complex history, you are able to change the commit history by interactive rebase.
OPTIONS. Perform the merge and commit the result. This option can be used to override --no-commit. With --no-commit perform the merge and stop just before creating a merge commit, to give the user a chance to inspect and further tweak the merge result before committing.
The Rebase Option But, instead of using a merge commit, rebasing re-writes the project history by creating brand new commits for each commit in the original branch. The major benefit of rebasing is that you get a much cleaner project history. First, it eliminates the unnecessary merge commits required by git merge .
