How to Merge Patent Assignment

In the United States, every inventor listed on a patent holds an undivided interest in that patent unless they assign it to another entity, such as their employer. If an assignment is neglected, it may lead to significant issues. For instance, if both an employer and an employee are named on a patent application and the employee does not assign their rights, they retain the right to utilize the invention. This could cause complications if the employer seeks to manufacture, license, or collect royalties from the patent. Therefore, it is crucial to properly file assignments when submitting a patent application to ensure that the entity that funded the invention retains all rights.
