What is an esignature API? An esignature (electronic signature or digital signature) application programming interface (API) is a Representational State Transfer (REST) web service that allows subscribers to securely request signatures online, obtain status updates, and download the completed documents.
Your digital signature validates the authenticity and integrity of your message. As the digital equivalent of a handwritten signature or stamped seal, a digital signature, used appropriately, should obviate tampering and impersonation.
There are various authentication methods for REST APIs, ranging from basic credentials and encryption to complex, multilayered access control and permissions validation. Basic authentication. API keys. HMAC encryption. OAuth 2.0. OpenID Connect. Choosing a REST API authentication approach.
Although both electronic signatures and digital signatures add authenticity and integrity to documents, they do so in different ways. Digital signatures make it possible to identify specific documents, whereas eSignatures demonstrate the intent of a signatory to be legally bound by the terms within a specific document.
For example, a REST API would use a GET request to retrieve a record, a POST request to create one, a PUT request to update a record, and a DELETE request to delete one. All HTTP methods can be used in API calls. A well-designed REST API is similar to a website running in a web browser with built-in HTTP functionality.
When an API interacts with another system, the touchpoints of this communication are considered endpoints. For APIs, an endpoint can include a URL of a server or service. Each endpoint is the location from which APIs can access the resources they need to carry out their function.
The signing process uses an encryption algorithm to combine the URL and your shared secret. The resulting unique signature allows our servers to verify that any site generating requests using your API key is authorized to do so.
The OpenText Core Signature REST API enables you to create documents and send them for signature. Using the API, have all the functionality of the frontend and more. It is also possible to receive events from OpenText Core Signature when, for example, a document has been signed.
