Go to the Insert menu and click Footnote to open the Footnote and Endnote box. Select the options you want in the Footnote and Endnote box. You can choose between footnotes and endnotes, numbering format, custom marks and symbols, a starting number, and whether to apply the numbering to the whole document.
Typographical devices such as the asterisk (*) or dagger () may also be used to point to notes; the traditional order of these symbols in English is *, , , , ‖, . Other symbols, including the #, , , , and ☞, have also been used.
To insert a footnote automatically in a Word document: Click on the point in the text where the footnote should appear. Select the References tab at the top and then click on Insert Footnote Type the text you want into the footnote that appears at the bottom of the page.
Footnotes are listed at the bottom of the page on which a citation is made. A numeral is placed in the text to indicate the cited work and again at the bottom of the page in front of the footnote. A footnote lists the author, title and details of publication, in that order.
For Word on a Mac: Right-click into an endnote, then select Footnote from the context menu: Using the drop-down menu under Number format, switch to your preferred style of numeral; then click the Apply button (not the Insert button):
The full notes are typed out at the bottom of the pages oftext (footnotes) or in a series of pages following the text of the paper (endnotes). Pages of notes following the end of the text should also be numbered consecutively.
Choice of a marker: Commonly used markers for footnotes are the asterisk or the star (*), the obelisk or the dagger (), the section sign (), and the paragraph sign or the blind P or the pilcrow (). If additional markers are needed, the same marks are doubled (**, , , ).
Footnotes (sometimes just called notes) are what they sound likea note (or a reference to a source of information) which appears at the foot (bottom) of a page. In a footnote referencing system, you indicate a reference by: Putting a small number above the line of type directly following the source material.
Click the HOME tab, and then in the Styles group, click the arrow for more options. Or, press ALT+CTRL+SHIFT+S. At the bottom of the Styles pane, click the Manage Styles button. For Sort order, choose Alphabetical.
Note Style: Footnote Styles To change footnote styles in a document with footnotes, click References Footnotes Footnote/Endnote Styles. In the Note Style dialog box, select the Footnote Styles tab. Select *, **, *** in Numbering Styles and click Set.
