A column encryption key is used to encrypt data in an encrypted column. A column master key is a key-protecting key that encrypts one or more column encryption keys.
The database master key is a symmetric key used to protect the private keys of certificates and asymmetric keys that are present in the database. When it is created, the master key is encrypted by using the AES256 algorithm and a user-supplied password.
The column master key is stored in the underlying key store. A plaintext value of the column encryption key is then used to encrypt query parameters that correspond to encrypted database columns. Or, the column encryption key decrypts query results from encrypted columns.
The master keys are used only to encipher and decipher keys. Other key-encrypting keys that are called transport keys also encipher and decipher keys and are used to protect cryptographic keys you transmit to other systems. These transport keys, while on the system, are also encrypted under a master key.
Right-click the certificate, and click All Tasks Export. Complete the Certificate Export Wizard to export the certificate without the private key as a DER encoded binary X. 509 file. Set the file name to i2-sqlserver-certificate.
Decrypt column level SQL Server encryption data In a query window, open the symmetric key and decrypt using the certificate. We need to use the same symmetric key and certificate name that we created earlier. Use the SELECT statement and decrypt encrypted data using the DecryptByKey() function.
Column Master Keys are key-protecting keys used in Always Encrypted to encrypt column encryption keys.
Create a column master key in a key store and its related metadata object in the database by using the Object Explorer in SQL Server Management Studio or PowerShell. For details, see Overview of Key Management for Always Encrypted.
