7 Types of Logos and Which Ones to Use For Your Brand Emblems. Pictorial marks (or logo symbols) Wordmarks (or logotypes) Monogram logos (or lettermarks) Abstract logo marks. Mascot logos. Combination marks.
Businesses often use a lockup, sometimes called a combination logo, as their primary identifying mark. The trick is to find the best combination of visual appeal and clear communication while meeting the restrictions of any specific application.
In general, I like to lump logos in three basic compartments: wordmarks, brandmarks, and combination lockups. These three compartments can cross-pollinate, live separate from each other, or stand on their own, and are usually parts of a larger logo system.
A type lockup is a typographic design where the words and characters are styled and arranged very specifically. Like the design is literally locked in place.
Lock-up, or Plate Gap, is the area where a printing plate is attached to the plate cylinder. Because the plate is bent and inserted into the cylinder, it cannot carry an image in this area. The lock-up area measures 3/8.
Logo Lockups. A lockup is a combination of the Queens logo or wordmark with a faculty, department, or unit name. It is presented as one graphic with a specified font, formatting, spacing, and alignment.
A lock-up is the final form of a logo with all of its elements locked in their relative positions. For the sake of maintaining consistency in all mediums, the lock-up should not be taken apart or altered in any way. A good lock-up will create a sense of cohesion between the elements.
Monogram (or lettermark) logos. Wordmark logos. Pictorial mark logos. Abstract logo marks.

Well-designed identities often have different logo variations or lock-ups. A lock-up is the final form of a logo with all of its elements locked in their relative positions. For the sake of maintaining consistency in all mediums, the lock-up should not be taken apart or altered in any way.
