Im going to show you how you can use formulas in Conditional Formatting and how you can conditionally format a range based on the value of another cell. So for example, conditionally format a row in Excel based on a sales value in that row? This way you can highlight a row or adjust the font color of a row based on another cell. Its going to be fun. Lets get to it. (upbeat music) In this example, I have lists of names and the yearly salary for each person. I want to format the values order rows if the salary is greater than or equal to the salary I type in here. So Im going to do two different versions of this. In the first version, I just want to highlight the values, in the second version I want to highlight the rows where this condition is true because Im adjusting the formatting based on a condition, I need to use Conditional Formatting. Here are the steps to do this: Select the entire dataset (A2:F17 in this example). Click the Home tab. In the Styles group, click on Conditional Formatting. Click on New Rules. In the New Formatting Rule dialog box, click on Use a formula to determine which cells to format.
In order to Pause /Switch off conditional formatting you can do the following: Highlight the cells. Activate the Conditional Formatting New Rule (HOME ribbon, Conditional Formatting dropdown, New Rule) Choose to Use a formula to determine which cells to format
Go to the Protection tab and uncheck Locked option and click Ok. Now select only the cells or columns, rows that you want to protect. Right click and choose Format cells again. Go to the protection tab and check Locked option and click Ok.
Unlock the cells that you have conditional formatting on but want the user to modify. Then protect the worksheet, using the default lock settings shown of Select locked cells and Select unlocked cells. The cells can then be edited, but conditional formatting cant be changed.

To protect your conditional formatting rules, you need to use a macro. A macro is a set of instructions that you can record and then play back. To record a macro, go to the View tab on the Excel ribbon and click on Macros. This will open the Macro Recorder.
Converting Conditional Formatting to Regular Formatting Load the workbook that contains your conditional formatting. Save the workbook as an HTML file. Restart Excel. Load into Excel the HTML file you saved in step 2. Save the workbook as an Excel workbook.
How To Apply Conditional Formatting Across An Entire Row In Google Sheets Highlight the data range you want to format. Choose Format Conditional formatting in the top menu. Choose Custom formula is rule. Enter your formula, using the $ sign to lock your column reference.
