Matching ZIP Codes with States, Counties, and Cities If it is more efficient for a mail carrier to drive across a state line to deliver mail, the ZIP code boundary will cross the state lines. ZIP codes dont usually cross state lines, but some do (65733, 71749, and 73949 are good examples).
The four extra numbers are added after a hyphen to complete the ZIP+4. So what do the extra numbers mean? These last 4 digits represent specific delivery routes within delivery areas. This extra detail means an even more precise matching to a more granular level.
As mentioned earlier, there are a few ZIP Codes that deliver across state lines, and there are a few ZIP/sectors that cross county lines. There are 153 ZIP Codes in more than one state. There are 9,000 ZIP Codes in more than one county.
In rare circumstances, a locality is assigned a ZIP Code that does not match the rest of the state. In even rarer cases a ZIP Code may cross state lines.
More accurate geographic match -- census tracts are one of the specific geographic units by which census counts are presented; ZIP Code Tabulation Areas are used to approximate the geographic boundaries of ZIP Codes.
In most instances the ZCTA code is the same as the ZIP Code for an area. In creating ZCTAs, the Census Bureau took the most frequently occurring ZIP Code in an area for the ZCTA code. Some addresses will end up with a ZCTA code different from their ZIP Code.
The current postal codes in the United States range from 00001 99950.
ZIP codes can and do cross state lines (rarely, but just enough to cause some problems and confusion), county lines (about 10% of ZIPs are in more than one county), political jurisdictions (cities, congressional districts), metro areas, etc.
