Hello, everyone and happy new year. My name is Daniel Culbertson, economist with the Indeed Hiring Lab. And it is time for your January US labor market update where I will cover some of the final labor market data points from the year 2020. The first jobs report of this year covering December 2020 was underwhelming to say the least. And in it, the impact of the resurgence of COVID-19 is quite clear. The US economy lost 140,000 jobs in the month of December, ending the labor market seven-month streak of payroll gains. Service industries took the majority of the hit. Leisure and hospitality employment fell by nearly half a million with 3/4 of that decrease coming in food service and drinking establishments. Retail remained a bit of a bright spot adding over 100,000 jobs in the month of December. News around the unemployment rate was a bit better but still showed signs of a labor market that is stagnating. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.7% in the month of December. And the

The national unemployment rate increased by 0.2 percentage point to 3.9 percent and was 0.3 point higher than in February 2023.

The unemployment rate peaked at an unprecedented level, not seen since data collection started in 1948, in April 2020 (14.8%) before declining to a still- elevated level in February 2021 (6.2%) relative to February 2020 (3.5%).
Household Survey Data Both the unemployment rate, at 3.8 percent, and the number of unemployed people, at 6.4 million, changed little in March. The unemployment rate has been in a narrow range of 3.7 percent to 3.9 percent since August 2023. (See table A-1.)
The long-term unemployed accounted for 20.8 percent of all unemployed people in January 2024. There were 1.3 million long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) in January 2024, accounting for 20.8 percent of all unemployed people. These figures were little changed from the previous month.
US Employed Persons is at a current level of 161.47M, up from 160.97M last month and up from 160.82M one year ago. This is a change of 0.31% from last month and 0.40% from one year ago.
The unadjusted unemployment rate in the United States stood at 3.9 percent in March 2024. This data is not seasonally adjusted. The adjusted monthly unemployment rate can be found here and the monthly civilian labor force participation rate here.
