Similar to a cover letter or letter of interest, a letter of intent follows a business letter format. It should be a few paragraphs that introduce you as a candidate, outline your intentions, and encourage the reader to follow up.
The structure of the LOI is a business letter. Therefore, write the LOI on business letterhead. Also, be sure that your companys address appears on the letterhead or add it to the letter on the right-hand side. The recipients address should appear on the left-hand side of the paper.
Use the first one or two sentences of your letter to formally introduce yourself. This section can include your name, a brief explanation of your current experience level and your reason for writing. For example, if youre a recent graduate, include information about your degree and areas of study.
If you send a physical copy of the letter, include your name, email and job title at the top of the letter above the date and recipients contact information.
To begin your statement of intent, introduce who you are and explain why youre applying for that particular graduate program. Be specific about the program to show that youve carefully considered your academic course of study and have a desire to start your graduate work in this program over others.
If youre writing a letter of intent, the above should still apply. However, youll need to do this as a formal letter. That should include a header containing the date, the recipients name and address, your name and address, and a salutation, as well as a closing and signature.
Begin your letter by introducing yourself and explaining why you are docHubing out. If you are responding to a specific job listing, say so. Otherwise, simply explain that you are interested in working for the company and explain the type of work you are interested in.
Components of a LOI Opening Paragraph: Your summary statement. Statement of Need: The why of the project. ( Project Activity: The what and how of the project. ( Outcomes (12 paragraphs; before or after the Project Activity) Credentials (12 paragraphs) Budget (12 paragraphs) Closing (1 paragraph) Signature.
