Raw Materials There are nine tin-bearing ores found naturally in the earths crust, but the only one that is mined to any extent is cassiterite. In addition to the ores themselves, several other materials are often used to process and refine tin. These include limestone, silica, and salt.
Tin is a natural metal.
Tin is a chemical element with symbol Sn and atomic number 50. Classified as a post-transition metal, Tin is a solid at room temperature.
Sn through 120Sn are formed in the s-process (slow neutron capture) in most stars which leads to them being the most common tin isotopes, while 122Sn and 124Sn are only formed in the r-process (rapid neutron capture) in supernovae and are less common. Tin isotopes 117Sn through 120Sn are also produced in the r-process.
Tin is found principally in the ore cassiterite (tin(IV) oxide). It is mainly found in the tin belt stretching through China, Thailand and Indonesia. It is also mined in Peru, Bolivia and Brazil. It is obtained commercially by reducing the ore with coal in a furnace.
Lesser tin grades are available as they can come as Grade B, Grade C, Grade D, Grade E and so forth. The grade of the tin will be based on the purity level and what is added into the metal. Grade M tins come in powder form and contains a purity level of 99.85%.
Tin is primarily obtained from the mineral cassiterite (SnO2) and is extracted by roasting cassiterite in a furnace with carbon. Tin makes up only about 0.001% of the earths crust and is chiefly mined in Malaysia. Two allotropes of tin occur near room temperature.
The principle of tin smelting is the chemical reduction of tin oxide by heating with carbon to produce tin metal and carbon dioxide gas. In practice, the furnace feed contains the tin oxide concentrate, carbon in the form of anthracite coal or coke, and limestone to act as a flux and a slag-producing agent.
Tin is extracted by roasting the mineral casseterite with carbon in a furnace to approximately 2500 degrees Fahrenheit. The next step involves leaching with acid or water solutions to remove impurities. Electrostatic or magnetic separation helps to remove any heavy metal impurities.
Cassiterite (SnO2) is by far the most important tin ore, although small amounts of tin are recovered from sulphide minerals such as stannite (Cu2FeSnS4). Tin occurs in both primary and secondary deposits.
