Each guest table is given a number, usually depending on where the table is placed, similar to a restaurant seating chart. In weddings, its also common for table numbers to correlate with roles in the wedding. For example, many label the head table as number one, with the couple and/or wedding party.
Wedding seating etiquette dictates that the happy couple should be front and centre, with certain members of their families and wedding party by their sides on a top table, but as we all know, weddings arent a one-size-fits-all situation.
The ideal distance between the tables is 30 inches. This distance is necessary for ensuring easy movement. Guests cannot sit on closed chairs and they have to pull out the chairs to accommodate. Having tables at distance will make it easier for the guests to sit comfortably.
This can be even more complicated when deciding who should sit at the bridal table. Traditional wedding etiquette says that the bride and groom sit in the centre of the bridal table, with the groom to the brides right, and the rest of the guests sit in an alternating boy-girl pattern.
The parents of the bride always sit in the first pew or row on the left, facing where the ceremony will be held; the grooms parents sit in the first row on the right. At same-sex marriage ceremonies, the couple might assign each family a side, and seat guests on Bills side or Kevins side ingly.
Classically, the groom sits to the brides right and the best man sits to her left. The maid of honor sits to the grooms right. Depending on how large the table is, the other attendants can also be seated near the couple.
This all depends on your family situation, but traditionally, your parents and your partners parents would share a table at the wedding reception. Additional VIPs would also be seated at the same table, like grandparents, siblings who arent already in the wedding party, and other close family friends.
