A symlink is a symbolic Linux/ UNIX link that points to another file or folder on your computer, or a connected file system. This is similar to a Windows shortcut. Symlinks can take two forms: Soft links are similar to shortcuts, and can point to another file or directory in any file system.
You use the ln command to create the links for the files and the -s option to specify that this will be a symbolic link. If you omit the -s option, then a hard link will be created instead. The existingsourcefile represents the file on your computer that you want to create the symbolic link for.
You can create a symlink (symbolic) by using the ln command in the command line. Symbolic links are useful because they act as shortcuts to a file or directory.
To check for symbolic links when -L has been specified, use -xtype l .
A symbolic link creates a file in your directory and acts as a shortcut to a file or folder. For example: I have a directory- lets say example.com. However, I want a shortcut to another directory within the example.com. To do this, you would create a symbolic link.
Your Bash script might need to determine if a file is a symlink or not. In Bash you can test this with the -L operator that returns true if the file exists and is a symlink.
In Command Prompt, run this command: dir /AL /S c:\ A list of all of the symbolic links in the c:\ directory will be returned.
