hi im chris camish and this is cs361 systems programming todays video is about symbol resolution so the main topic of what weve been talking about so far is building from a source code to a running program one of the really important intermediate points of this is creating the object files that are the output of the compiler that has taken our source file and turned it into assembly code and some extra things that were eventually going to need to fix later on that is that intermediate is that intermediate file has a whole bunch of assembly instructions for the code that we wrote but it also has references to code that other people wrote that eventually needs to be incorporated into our program to make it actually runnable so in this case weve got things like hoots and fprintf that exist in this file as references to functions but we cant jump to them yet because the definition isnt in here even if we let the preprocessor open up stdio.h and jam it into this file its not going

Linker symbols have a name and a value. The value is a 32-bit unsigned integer, even if it represents a pointer value on a target that has pointers smaller than 32 bits. The most common kind of symbol is generated by the compiler for each function and variable.
The symbol cache is the location on your local machine that Visual Studio places a copy of the symbols it finds on remote locations for future use. Assuming you provide a path for the symbol cache, Visual Studio will search the cache before trying to find symbols in any symbol file locations you specified above.
Symbol files are created when images are compiled and are used for debugging an image. They allow someone with the correct tools to view code as the software is running. In addition, when an exception occurs the symbol files allow the line number of the issue to be determined and added to the stack trace.

You can force symbol loading to occur by using the /f option or by issuing an ld (Load Symbols) command. The . reload command is useful if the system stops responding (that is, crashes), which might cause you to lose symbols for the target computer that is being debugged.
