If you have certain symptoms that could mean cancer, if your Pap test result shows abnormal cells, or if your HPV test is positive, you will most likely need to have a procedure called a colposcopy. You will lie on the exam table as you do with a pelvic exam.
A yeast infection can happen if your skin gets damaged. Yeast can also overgrow in warm or humid conditions. An infection can also happen if you have a weak immune system. Taking antibiotics can also cause an overgrowth of yeast.
If your symptoms are severe, or you have frequent yeast infections, your doctor might recommend: Long-course vaginal therapy. Your doctor might prescribe an antifungal medication taken daily for up to two weeks, followed by once a week for six months. Multidose oral medication.
If your Pap smear is abnormal, your doctor may perform a procedure called colposcopy using a special magnifying instrument (colposcope) to examine the tissues of the cervix, vagina and vulva. Your doctor also may take a tissue sample (biopsy) from any areas that appear abnormal.
Other things can cause cells to look abnormal, including irritation, some infections (such as a yeast infection), growths (such as polyps in the uterus), and changes in hormones that occur during pregnancy or menopause. Although these things may make cervical cells look abnormal, they are not related to cancer.
The Pap test and HPV test are screening tests, not diagnostic tests. They cannot tell for certain if you have cervical cancer. An abnormal Pap test or HPV test result may mean more testing is needed to see if a cancer or a pre-cancer is present.
Most abnormal Pap smear results are nothing to worry about Most women will have at least one abnormal Pap smear result in their lifetime, with an overall average of 5% of all Pap tests coming back as abnormal. In most cases, the abnormal result is nothing to worry about, but its important to follow up to make sure.
ASC-US is the most common abnormal Pap test result. ASC-US stands for atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. Squamous refers to the type of cells that make up the tissue that covers the cervix. LSILThis means that the cervical cells show changes that are mildly abnormal.
There are five main categories of abnormal Pap smear results within the Bethesda system: Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US). Squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL). Atypical squamous cells that may or may not be HSIL (ASC-H). Atypical glandular cells (AGC). Cancer.
There are millions of women who have abnormal Pap smears each year, but, by and large, less than 1% of abnormal Pap tests are associated with cervical cancer, Dr. Rubatt said. By far, abnormal tests are not indicative of a cancer diagnosis.
