Link State Advertisements (LSAs) are messages communicated via multicast to other routers in the OSPF domain. They are sent from internal routers to the DR/BDR routers to announce changes. This communication occurs on multicast address 224.0. 0.6.
The basic concept of link-state routing is that every node constructs a map of the connectivity to the network, in the form of a graph, showing which nodes are connected to which other nodes. Each node then independently calculates the next best logical path from it to every possible destination in the network.
Distance vector routing calculates the best route based on the distance (fewest number of hops). As against, Link state routing calculates the best route on the basis of least cost. Link state routing updates only the link state while Distance vector routing updates full routing table.
The Link State Routing Algorithm is an interior protocol used by every router to share the information or knowledge about the rest of the routers on the network. The link state routing algorithm is a distributed algorithm using which every router computes its routing table.
OSPF is not a distance-vector protocol like RIP, but a link-state protocol with a set of metrics that can be used to reflect much more about a network than just the number of routers encountered between source and destination. In OSPF, a router attempts to route based on the state of the links.
Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) is a link-state routing protocol that was developed for IP networks and is based on the Shortest Path First (SPF) algorithm. OSPF is an Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP).
The basic concept of link-state routing is that every node constructs a map of the connectivity to the network, in the form of a graph, showing which nodes are connected to which other nodes. Each node then independently calculates the next best logical path from it to every possible destination in the network.
EIGRP is a distance vector Link State routing protocol that uses the diffusing update algorithm (DUAL) (based on work from SRI International) to improve the efficiency of the protocol and to help prevent calculation errors when attempting to determine the best path to a remote network.
The Link State Routing Algorithm is an interior protocol used by every router to share the information or knowledge about the rest of the routers on the network. The link state routing algorithm is a distributed algorithm using which every router computes its routing table.
Link State routing protocols utilize more memory and cpu as compared to distance vector protocols. Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and Intermediate Systems-to-Intermediate Systems (IS-IS) are examples of Link State routing protocols.
