Welcome to Truck Driver Institute, where we support every student in getting them on their feet and into a high-paying career. We spoke with TDI graduates who shared their journey to earning a six-figure income. Before TDI, I was pretty much working warehouse jobs pretty much dead ended. And Im also a member at the Army National Guard. What made me go into trucking was pretty much the job security. I also have two kids. One is a one-year-old and I have a eight-year-old son. I was more-so looking for a career as opposed to a job. Before TDI I drove for Uber in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia metro area. I enjoyed driving for Uber because I could set my own schedule and I could be my own boss. I talked with one of my friends that actually came through TDI and he explained to me the process and how long it took. It was three weeks and I said oh thats not that bad. It is your workday, the time between your off-duty periods of at least 10 consecutive hours. You must be released from duty within 16 hours after coming on duty. You must only use this exception once every 7 consecutive days (unless you took 34 consecutive hours off to restart a 7/8-day period).
To claim the exemption, from the Daily Log the driver taps 16-Hour Short-Haul exemption and selects the time within the shift to apply the exemption. The exemption can only be claimed during the cycle it is applied. The exemption displays as a remark in the Daily Log and in the DOT Inspection log.
To be a commercial truck driver in the US you need to be over the age of 21 (or 18 if staying in-state). You need to attend a truck driving school and pass a test in order to earn a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). Once you have this, you can start applying to trucking jobs and gaining experience.
The 16-hour rule is a special exemption that allows specific drivers to remain on-duty for 16 hours instead of 14, but without extending the allowed 11 hours per day of driving. This exemption applies to drivers that have started and stopped their workdays at the same location for the previous five workdays.
The so-called 16-hour short-haul or big day exception allows eligible drivers to extend the 14-hour period by up to two hours once per week. Under the exception, drivers must: Meet certain conditions.
Employment Application. Medical Examiners Certificate. Copy of Drivers License. Road Test Certificate. Motor Vehicle Records. Annual Drivers Certificate of Violations.
If you go over your 14-hour clock, it is considered a violation of the hours-of-service regulations for commercial drivers in the United States. Going over the 14-hour limit can result in penalties and violations, including fines and potential out-of-service orders.
The Department of Transportation and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration require that truck drivers be able to read and speak English well enough to communicate with the general public, to understand road signs and signals that are in English, to respond to law enforcement and DOT officials, and to fill out
