In link-state routing protocols, each router possesses information about the complete network topology. Each router then independently calculates the best next hop from it for every possible destination in the network using local information of the topology. The collection of best-next-hops forms the routing table.
An advantage of link-state protocols is that they use cost metrics to choose paths through the network. The cost metric reflects the capacity of the links on those paths. These protocols have a complete and synchronized picture of the overall network, therefore routing loops are very rare an difficult to occur.
Link state routing is a method in which each router shares its neighbourhoods knowledge with every other router in the internetwork. In this algorithm, each router in the network understands the network topology then makes a routing table depend on this topology.
Examples of Link state routing protocols include OSPF - Open Shortest Path First and IS-IS - Intermediate System to Intermediate System. There are also routing protocols that are considered to be hybrid in the sense that they use aspects of both distance vector and link state protocols.
The Link State Routing Algorithm is an interior protocol used by every router to share the information or knowledge about the rest of the routers on the network. The link state routing algorithm is a distributed algorithm using which every router computes its routing table.
The basic concept of link-state routing is that every node constructs a map of the connectivity to the network, in the form of a graph, showing which nodes are connected to which other nodes. Each node then independently calculates the next best logical path from it to every possible destination in the network.
Distance vector routing is the routing protocol that selects the path based on parameter distance. Link State routing protocol is the protocol that chooses the best path based on the cost of the path.
