in this video well be discussing how link state routing algorithms work lets get started [Music] today well pick up where we left off last time and look at the link state routing algorithm as a reminder the link state algorithm falls into the category of requiring global information about all the interfaces in the network the full name of the algorithm is dijkstras link state routing algorithm as we said it requires global information meaning that every single router needs information about every other routers interfaces and whether theyre up or down and what theyre connected to this information is distributed to the link state advertisements and so every router will receive information from every other router in the network once this advertisement happens all of the routers have the same information about the state of the network using that information each router can compute the least cost paths from itself to every other router in the network and from this it can distill the

Pros: OSPF routing protocol has complete knowledge of network topology, allowing routers to calculate routes based on incoming requests. OSPF protocol has no limitations in hop count, unlike RIP protocol that has only 15 hops at most. So OSPF converges faster than RIP and has better load balancing.
The Link State Routing Algorithm is an interior protocol used by every router to share the information or knowledge about the rest of the routers on the network. The link state routing algorithm is a distributed algorithm using which every router computes its routing table.
The basic concept of link-state routing is that every node constructs a map of the connectivity to the network, in the form of a graph, showing which nodes are connected to which other nodes. Each node then independently calculates the next best logical path from it to every possible destination in the network.
A link state packet can carry a large amount of information : the node identity, the list of links, a sequence number, and age. The first two, node identity and the list of links, are needed to make the topology. The third, sequence number, facilitates flooding and distinguishes new LSPs from old ones.
Advantages. Fast Network Convergence: It is the main advantage of the link-state routing protocol. Because of receiving an LSP, link-state routing protocols immediately flood the LSP out of all interfaces without any changes except for the interface from which the LSP was received.
Link state protocols send information about directly connected links to all the routers in the network. Distance vector protocols have slow convergence and suffer from the count-to-infinity problem. Link state routing protocols are widely used in large networks due to their fast convergence and high reliability.
Link state protocols, sometimes called shortest path first or distributed database protocols, are built around a well-known algorithm from graph theory, E. W. Dijkstraa shortest path algorithm. Examples of link state routing protocols are: Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) for IP.
In distance vector routing the routers receive the topological information from the neighbour point of view. On the contrary, in link state routing the router receive complete information on the network topology. Distance vector routing calculates the best route based on the distance (fewest number of hops).
The link-state advertisement (LSA) is a basic communication means of the OSPF routing protocol for the Internet Protocol (IP). It communicates the routers local routing topology to all other local routers in the same OSPF area.
Fast Network Convergence: It is the main advantage of the link-state routing protocol. Because of receiving an LSP, link-state routing protocols immediately flood the LSP out of all interfaces without any changes except for the interface from which the LSP was received.
