Type the ps aux to see all running process in Linux. Alternatively, you can issue the top command or htop command to view running process in Linux.
Note – Sometimes when we execute ps command, it shows TIME as 00:00:00. It is nothing but the total accumulated CPU utilization time for any process and 00:00:00 indicates no CPU time has been given by the kernel till now.
The command ps stands for process. In UNIX, everything you do, every command you type, is considered a "process".
In Unix/Linux operating systems, processes can be in one of the following states: RUNNING & RUNNABLE. INTERRRUPTABLE_SLEEP. UNINTERRUPTABLE_SLEEP. STOPPED. ZOMBIE.
Description. ps displays status information about processes, and optionally, the threads running under each process. By default, for each process that is associated with the user's terminal, ps displays the process ID (PID), TTY, processor time used (TIME), and name of the command (COMM).
Defunct/Zombie (Z): It is a process that is done executing, but still has an entry in the process table. If the child process has completed execution and is in a terminated state but the parent hasn't read the exit status with the wait system call yet, then the child process enters the zombie state.
The CPU stats in top give you information about what your CPU(s) are up to. It shows you the percentage of time that the computer's CPUs spent on performing different types of tasks. This data is basically real-time, so the numbers you see are based on the interval since the last screen refresh.
The ps command, short for Process Status, is a command line utility that is used to display or view information related to the processes running in a Linux system.
There are no differences in the output because the meanings are the same. The difference between ps -ef and ps aux is due to historical divergences between POSIX and BSD systems. At the beginning, POSIX accepted the -ef while the BSD accepted only the aux form. Both list all processes of all users.
ps displays information about a selection of the active processes. If you want a repetitive update of the selection and the displayed information, use top instead. This version of ps accepts several kinds of options: 1 UNIX options, which may be grouped and must be preceded by a dash.
