The basic concept of link-state routing is that every node constructs a map of the connectivity to the network, in the form of a graph, showing which nodes are connected to which other nodes. Each node then independently calculates the next best logical path from it to every possible destination in the network.
Using this database, the various routers are able to calculate the shortest path to other routers using the SPF algorithm. The cost of each router interface is assigned by the network administrator. This number can include the delay, the bandwidth, and any monetary cost factors.
OSPF routers collect this information into a link-state database (LSDB) that is shared and synchronized among the various routers. Using this database, the various routers are able to calculate the shortest path to other routers using the SPF algorithm.
OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) and IS-IS (Intermediate System to Intermediate System) are two examples of Link State Routing Protocols. It is a dynamic routing algorithm in which each router in the network shares information about its neighbours with all other routers.
Examples of link-state routing protocols include Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and Intermediate System to Intermediate System (IS-IS). The link-state protocol is performed by every switching node in the network (i.e., nodes that are prepared to forward packets; in the Internet, these are called routers).
Link state routing is a method in which each router shares its neighbourhoods knowledge with every other router in the internetwork. In this algorithm, each router in the network understands the network topology then makes a routing table depend on this topology.
These packets are called link-state advertisements (LSAs), and they describe the network topology in great detail. Each router stores the received LSA packets in the link-state database (LSDB). After LSDBs are synced between the routers, OSPF uses the shortest path first (SPF) algorithm to calculate the best routes.
A common example of a link state protocol is the OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) routing protocol. Local topological information is advertised by each router in link state advertisements (LSAs).
Link State Packet (LSP) is a packet of information generated by a network router in a link state routing protocol that lists the routers neighbors. Link state packet can also be further defined as special datagrams that determine the names of and the cost or distance to any neighboring routers and associated networks.
