R14 is also called the Link Register (LR). This is used for holding the return address when calling a function or subroutine. At the end of the function or subroutine, the program control can return to the calling program and resume by loading the value of LR into the Program Counter (PC).
Link registers In AArch64 state, the Link Register (LR) stores the return address when a subroutine call is made. It can also be used as a general-purpose register if the return address is stored on the stack.
A link register (LR for short) is a register which holds the address to return to when a subroutine call completes. This is more efficient than the more traditional scheme of storing return addresses on a call stack, sometimes called a machine stack.
So, push{lr} is putting the return address, in the link register, onto the stack when the subroutine is called. pop{pc} is fetching that return address off the stack and putting it into the program counter, thus returning control back to the place the subroutine was called from.
In Thumb, SP is strictly defined as the stack pointer. The instruction pages in the Assembler Reference describes when SP and PC can be used. In User mode, LR (or R14) is used as a link register to store the return address when a subroutine call is made.
R13 is the Stack Pointer (SP). It is used for accessing the stack memory, for example with PUSH and POP instructions. When the processor pushes new data onto the stack, it decrements the stack pointer and then writes the data to the memory location. Physically, there can be either two or four different stack pointers.
Written by bl (branch and link, like function call), often saved with a push/pop sequence, read by bx lr (branch to link register) or the pop. r15. pc. Program counter, the current memory address being executed.
On an ARM Cortex M series device, the link register (LR or R14) is a core register that stores the return address, such as when making a function call. In the case of an exception, the return address is pushed onto the stack by hardware and the LR is set to EXCRETURN (0xFFFFFFF1, 0xFFFFFFF9, or 0xFFFFFFFD).
