Hi, its Alan from Crashtest Security. In this video, I will tell you more about the basics of certificate key size and how to tweak your security properties for the best protection of your server certificates and overall systems. In particular, this video looks at TLS/SSL certificates and the RSA and ECDSA key types. So lets get started! The importance of a certificate key size is immense in terms of encryption for all types of network traffic and communications security today. The safety of encrypted connections thus depends heavily on the used key size, as keys of sufficient length are necessary for better protection, as they are more challenging to break. Encryption certificates like the Transport Layer Security and the Secure Sockets Layer are the building blocks of secure online interactions. They protect our credentials, such as usernames and passwords, financial data, credit card numbers, and many other security items personal and sensitive details transmitted online. In 201

In cryptography, key size or key length is the size (measured in bits or bytes) of the key used in a cryptographic algorithm (such as a cipher).
The difference between RSA 2048 and RSA 4096 lies in their bit length, with RSA 2048 being 2048 bits long and RSA 4096 doubling that at 4096 bits, offering enhanced security at the cost of increased processing time. NIST deems RSA 2048 sufficient until 2030, balancing security strength and computational efficiency.
When youre using CloudFront alternate domain names and HTTPS, the maximum size of the public key in an SSL/TLS RSA certificate is 4096 bits. (This is the key size, not the number of characters in the public key.)
MEASUREMENTS: Each certificate paper are standard letter sized and measures 8.5 x 11 inches.
For the key size, you need to select a bit length of at least 2048 when using RSA and 256 when using ECDSA; these are the smallest key sizes allowed for SSL certificates. Unless you need to use a larger key size, we recommend sticking with 2048 with RSA and 256 with ECDSA.
Assumption: A link certificate is used, when an old certificate is replaced by a new one. The link certificate is the new certificate signed with the old private key. So that with the old public key, the new certificate could be verified.
They define the relative protection provided by different types of algorithms in bits of security. NIST recommends the use of keys with a minimum strength of 112 bits of security to protect data until 2030, and 128 bits of security thereafter. A 2048-bit RSA key provides 112-bit of security.
Go to the Security tab and click on View Certificate. Youll see three tabs on the top of the page. The first would be the websites name. In the Public Key Info, youll see information relating to the algorithm (in this example, its the RSA algorithm) and the SSL key size (which is 2048 bits for digicert.com).
