Nurses select the appropriate gauge and length ing to the medication ordered, the anatomical location selected, and the patients body mass and age. For example, an intramuscular injection requires a longer needle to docHub muscle tissue than an intradermal injection that is inserted just under the epidermis.
-The amount of fluid, size of the patient, type of tissue and viscosity of the medication determine the size of the needle to be used. -Larger -capacity syringes are used for blood draw, prepare medications.
Intramuscular (IM) injections The needle length and gauge are the same as when the deltoid muscle is used, i.e., 11 length, 2225 gauge. You should choose needle length based on the weight of your adult patients, as follows: Adults weighing less than 130 lbs (60 kg): Use of a 1 needle is recommended.
You can use a Medication Administration Record (MAR) to help you keep track of every dose that the individual you support takes or misses for whatever reason. A MAR includes key information about the individuals medication including, the medication name, dose taken, special instructions and date and time.
Appropriate needle size and angle of insertion helps ensure that medication is injected into the subcutaneous tissue without harm to underlying muscle mass, nerves, or bone. No-pinch method: Use a 12- to 58-inch needle.
The gauge of the needle is determined by the type of medication administered. Aqueous solutions can be given with a 20- to 25-gauge needle; oily or viscous medications should be administered with 18- to 21-gauge needles. A smaller gauge needle (22 to 25 gauge) should be used with children.
