In early days, pipes are available in only three sizes, standard weight (STD), extra-strong (XS), and double extra-strong (XXS). This system was called iron pipe size (IPS) system. Nominal pressure 16 bar; maximum internal allowable pressure (in bar) of a mechanical component, considering a temperature of 20 C.
NB (nominal bore) is also frequently used interchangeably with NPS. Diameter Nominal (DN) This is the international and European metric method used to describe NPS (or NB).DN pipe sizes numbers are therefore different to NPS. For example, the metric equivalent of an NPS 6 pipe (6) is DN 150. (
Nominal diameter (DN) and nominal pressure (PN)
Similarly, PN 20 pipe means the pipe is designed to withstand a pressure of 20 bar at the maximum design temperature. For PE/HDPE pipes the PN rating pressure usually denotes the pressure capability at a temperature of 20C.
100NB pipe works out to be exactly 4.5 inches (4.5(inches) x 25.4(mm/inch) = 114.3mm). That is why the outside diameter cant be simple number like 100mm.
A 4 inches (100 mm) Schedule 80 pipe has an outside diameter of 4.500 inches ( 114.30 mm), a wall thickness of 0.337 inches (8.56 mm), giving a bore of 3.826 inches (97.18 mm)
Confusingly, for pipe sizes with a NB of 12 inch (DN 300 mm) and below, the nominal bore and outside diameter are different. For example, a pipe with a 12 inch NB (DN 300 mm) has an OD of 12.75 inches, or 324 mm. The pipe schedule sets the pipe wall thickness.
NB (nominal bore) is the European designation equivalent to NPS is DN (diamtre nominal/nominal diameter/Durchmesser nach Norm), in which sizes are measured in millimeters. NB (nominal bore) is also frequently used interchangeably with NPS. OD is the outside diameter of the pipe and is fixed for a given size.
DN stands for diametre nominal, which denotes the size of a pipe (specifically, its inside diameter) in millimeters (mm). NPS, or nominal pipe size, is merely the non-metric equivalent in which the diameter is measured in inches (in.).
The nominal bore is the hollow section of the pipe. Nominal refers to the approximate measurement of the bore. Pipe was originally measured in inches. 100NB pipe works out to be exactly 4.5 inches (4.5(inches) x 25.4(mm/inch) = 114.3mm).
