Because charitable contributions are often tax deductible, taxpayers must furnish proof in the form of an official dated receipt from the receiving organization or some other official transaction record.
Although there is no requirement to do so, many churches seek recognition of tax-exempt status from the IRS because this recognition assures church leaders, members and contributors that the church is recognized as exempt and qualifies for related tax benefits.
Your nonprofit treasurer should record cash donations in your statement of activities, which is a component of your complete financial statement that provides a net change in assets over the course of the year. In other words, it is a picture of how profitable your nonprofit agency is.
To be contemporaneous the written acknowledgment must generally be obtained by the donor no later than the date the donor files the return for the year the contribution is made. The written acknowledgment must state whether the donee provides any goods or services in consideration for the contribution.
These documents should include the churchs name, the donation amount, the date of the contribution and a statement confirming whether any goods or services were provided in exchange. Bank statements and checks: Keep copies of bank statements or canceled checks that show the date and amount of each cash donation.
