Welcome everybody to the Website Evaluation Workshop. My name is Amanda Bezet and I am one of the reference librarians here at the NCU Library. Now we do have a number of learning objectives today that are located in your workshop outline. If you do not have your workshop outline in front of you thats certainly okay. Id like to show you where you can access that at any point. So you can go to the Research Help drop-down menu and click on Learn the Library. From here youre going to click on the Library Workshop Videos in order to access the full-length video recordings of all of our Librarys workshops. Or you can navigate to the outlines as well as the transcripts. So Ill click on the outlines and then if you need to return to the Website Evaluation Outline, you will see that here. Following the presentation, we do have a recommended workshop activity that you can do to sort of test your own knowledge with evaluating websites. So thats also accessible here as well as from within t

When evaluating a website, consider the sites URL (Uniform Resource Locator), a protocol for specifying addresses on the Internet. The URL can tell you several things about the website: creator, audience, purpose, and sometimes country of origin.
To identify the domain name, begin reading the URL from left to right: Some web browsers might show the protocol followed by a colon and two slashes (http:// or https://), other web browsers hide that part. The part after the protocol and before the next single slash is the domain name.
How To Evaluate A Website 1) Open the site. The first thing students need to do is open the site. 2) Skim read. 3) Look for the answer to your question. 4) Consider the credibility of the author or website. 5) Consider the purpose of the site. 6) Look for the date. If the site is no good, bounce back Crosscheck.
Criteria for Evaluating Web Resources Are the purpose and scope stated? Who is the intended audience? Is the information clearly presented as being factual or opinion, primary or secondary in origin? What criteria are used for inclusion of the information? Is any sponsorship or underwriting fully disclosed?
Evaluate Websites Evaluating Websites. When using the Internet, you must remember that it lacks any kind of quality control and it is not regulated in any way. Accuracy. Is the website well-researched and information properly cited? Authority. Objectivity. Currency. Coverage. Relevancy.
The ABCD of Web Evaluation: What to look for Authority - Who is the author? What are the authors credentials? Bias - Is the information balanced? Is it more opinion than fact? Currency - When was the page last updated? Are any links dead? Documentation - Is information documented with references?
There are six (6) criteria that should be applied when evaluating any Web site: authority, accuracy, objectivity, currency, coverage, and appearance.
