Some conditions that cause abnormal Pap smear results can produce uncomfortable symptoms, such as: Pain, itching or burning around the genital area during sexual intercourse or urination. Unusual vaginal discharge. Rashes, sores, warts or bumps around the genital area. Vaginal soreness and pain.
Endocervical cells absent. This means that the sampling of cells during your pap didn't include those inside-the-canal cells. If you've never had an abnormal pap in the past, it's fine for an occasional pap to not sample these cells.
An abnormal test result does not mean you have cancer. Your health care provider will recommend monitoring, more testing, or treatment.
Most of the abnormal cells found during a Pap test are the result of a cervical or vaginal infection and are not cancerous. Abnormal Pap tests are very common. In fact, of the 3 million women with abnormal Pap tests each year, less than 1% (13,240 cases) will be diagnosed with cervical cancer.
Results: Among the total of 1699 patients who had their Pap smear done, 139 (8.18%) revealed epithelial cell abnormality.
The presence of endocervical component (ECs) on cervical smears is considered essential for determining the adequacy of the Pap smear. The absence of an endocervical component in a negative smear suggests that a repeat Pap smear should be taken.
If your Pap test is abnormal, this means that your sample contained abnormally shaped cervical cells. Most of the abnormal cells found during a Pap test are the result of a cervical or vaginal infection and are not cancerous. Abnormal Pap tests are very common.
Cell types This is called the endocervix. The skin-like cells of the ectocervix can become cancerous, leading to a squamous cell cervical cancer. This is the most common type of cervical cancer. The glandular cells of the endocervix can also become cancerous, leading to an adenocarcinoma of the cervix.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells don't look completely normal, but it's not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
