DEFINITIONS: WHAT IS PPI/PII??? PPI stands for Protected Personal Information. PII stands for Personally Identifiable Information. PPI and PII are interchangeable at this time.
Examples include name, phone number, and address. One of these pieces of data may not be enough to identify an individual. However, when collected together, they can identify a particular person and therefore constitute personal data. This is why it is often referred to as personally identifiable information or PII.
When emailing Sensitive PII outside of DHS, save it in a separate document and password-protect or encrypt it. Send the encrypted document as an email attachment and provide the password to the recipient in a separate email or by phone. [See the instructions in the Handbook for Safeguarding Sensitive PII.]
PII comes in two varieties. Linked information is the more sensitive variety. Anything that can by itself be used as an identifier is considered linked information. Social security numbers, drivers license numbers, full names, and physical addresses are all examples of linked information.
Business Identifiable Information (BII) Information that is defined in the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) as trade secrets and commercial or financial information obtained from a person and privileged or confidential. Personally Identifiable Information (PII) Information that can be used to distinguish or trace
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau defines PII as information that can be used to distinguish or trace an individuals identity. That includes your name, address, Social Security number and birthday.
