Here at the Meetology Lab our passion is the psychology of exceptional social skills - face-to-face interaction - so, unusually this week, Im going to actually focus on texting. Theres one thing that you can add to a text message which has been shown to totally change, potentially negatively, the way it is interpreted. My name is Jonathan Bradshaw and welcome to this weeks Meetology Minute. An unusual insight this week because its based on text messaging, but it made us laugh here and one that if you have this situation too. It comes from research undertaken from the U.S. or in the U.S. by researchers at the University of Binghampton in New York State and it looked into whether people did or didnt add a full-stop (I think Americans call it a period) at the end of a text message. Think about when youve sent messages and how theyre perceived or perhaps how you perceive text messages when they have or havent got a full stop at the end. Because, ing to this research from the U.S.,

On web, replace the link with text that is hyperlinked; for example follow this website to learn more about UX design. Its recommended to leave off the terminal punctuation or rephrase the text, so the URL doesnt come at the end unless you have complete control over how the address is produced.
Hyperlinks allow us to link documents to other documents or resources, link to specific parts of documents, or make apps available at a web address. Almost any web content can be converted to a link so that when clicked or otherwise activated the web browser goes to another web address (URL).
Put any terminal punctutation (period, question mark, exclamation mark) outside the hyperlink.
Periods with URLs Whenever possible, avoid putting URLs in text. Rewrite the sentence so that the URL isnt at the end of the sentence. Put the URL on a separate line from the text, omitting the final period.
When using a link phrase that is even in part reliant on the surrounding context to make its purpose clear, it is usually best to include the link at the end of the sentence rather than the beginning; its easier, particularly for screen reader users, to read and interpret.
Dont add a full stop after hashtags, emojis or handles Use correct punctuation in government social media. You dont need a full stop if your post ends in: a web address (URL)
ing to section the hpath element of an URL can not contain a . (period).
In years past this was a real problem, but these days you can stop worrying about it. Using Microsoft Word, Gmail, Outlook, etc., punctuation will not cause a problem with your links the software will create an accurate link for you, in spite of any punctuation that follows it.
A period is a small dot-shaped punctuation mark that is used at the end of any sentence that is intended to make a statement. As with other punctuation marks that end sentences, the period should be placed directly behind the last letter of the last word of the sentence.
The use of the period is one example of situational code-switching: When using one in a text message, its perceived as overly formal. So when you end your text with a period, it can come across as insincere or awkward, just like using formal spoken language in a casual setting like a bar.
