Testosterone can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. These changes may increase the risk of heart disease (including heart attack), stroke, and diabetes. The risks are greater for FTMs who smoke, are overweight, or have a family history of heart disease.
Testosterone in women In women, testosterone is directly linked to the menstrual cycle, in that it is essential for the production of the main female sex hormone, estrogen. Testosterone is also useful for the growth and repair of reproductive tissues.
After you begin masculinizing hormone therapy, youll notice the following changes in your body over time: Menstruation stops. This will occur within 2 to 6 months of starting treatment.
Early changes tend to include oily skin, acne, and the cessation of menstrual periods. Later changes may include changes to facial appearance, hair growth, clitoral changes, and increased muscle mass.
Trans people who go through a natal estrogen-based puberty usually get their first period between 9 and 14 years of age, though people who go on hormone blockers may not ever get a period. Menstruation might continue until menopause, which can occur anywhere between 44-55 years of age.
If you have been period-free while taking testosterone and you suddenly start experiencing bleeding again, please see your healthcare provider for a checkup. A sudden return of periods in a person on testosterone could indicate a health problem, or it could be a benign change.
You may notice at first that your periods become lighter, arrive later, or are shorter in duration, though some may notice heavier or longer lasting periods for a few cycles before they stop altogether. Testosterone may reduce your ability to become pregnant but it does not completely eliminate the risk of pregnancy.
Testosterone - An important sex hormone for both women and men, although women have much lower levels. Is produced by the ovaries and adrenal glands (right on top of the kidneys), and has a surge at time of ovulation and slight rise just before the menses.
After menarche, menstruation can be dysphoric for trans and non-binary individuals; however, the dysphoria in both menarche and later menses are both due to the established social norms of menstruation as feminine. The blood itself appears to have little meaning without its gendered connotation.
Changes in s/ions may require up to 6 months. Effects on quality of life manifest within 34 weeks, but maximum benefits take longer. Effects on depressive mood become detectable after 36 weeks with a maximum after 1830 weeks.
