The USDOT Number serves as a unique identifier when collecting and monitoring a company's safety information acquired during audits, compliance reviews, crash investigations, and inspections.
Understanding the Differences Between the Two A USDOT number is required both with interstate commerce and intrastate operations within the United States. However if you are only operating within your state lines without crossing any borders, you can usually get away with only having a DOT.
If the status reads “Record Inactive” or “Inactive USDOT Number per 49 CFR 390.19(b)(4); Biennial update of MCS-150 data not completed” you will need to complete, sign and submit a new Motor Carrier Identification Report (Form MCS-150) to reactivate the USDOT Number.
How Do I Check My Application Status? Go to the SAFER website. See bold heading “FMCSA Searches” Click on “Licensing & Insurance” Enter MC Number or USDOT Number in the appropriate box and click “search” Click “HTML” Scroll to bottom and click on “Authority History.”
If you are transporting exempt commodities (see below) and have a USDOT number, you may operate as an exempt for-hire interstate motor carrier without an MC number. You are still required to abide by your state regulations.
You can determine the status of your USDOT number in these ways: Online: Go to the SAFER website and search by name, USDOT number or MC number. By email: You can submit your question via our web form (you will receive a tracking number) Phone: Call 800-832-5660 to speak to FMCSA Customer Service.
If you see the status as “Not Authorized,” this means your Operating Authority (MC/FF#) is not active and you are not authorized to operate as for hire in interstate commerce. Once your Operating Authority becomes active, the status will change to “Authorized” in our systems.
Visit https://portal. fmcsa.dot.gov/ login and enter your username and password to log into the FMCSA Portal. In the USDOT# List, select the USDOT Number you want to link with your Clearinghouse account.
A US DOT number identifies carriers operating in interstate commerce while an MC number identifies a carrier who transports regulated commodities for hire in interstate commerce.
Visit https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov. Click Log In and access the Clearinghouse using your login.gov username and password. Under My Dashboard, go to Manage and click C/TPAs. To designate your C/TPA as part of the registration process, see the instructions in one of the job aids below.
