There are two types of ACLs: Filesystem ACLs━filter access to files and/or directories. Filesystem ACLs tell operating systems which users can access the system, and what privileges the users are allowed. Networking ACLs━filter access to the network.
An access control list (ACL) is a list of access control entries (ACE). Each ACE in an ACL identifies a trustee and specifies the access rights allowed, denied, or audited for that trustee. The security descriptor for a securable object can contain two types of ACLs: a DACL and a SACL.
Available value ranges include: 2000 to 2999 for basic ACLs. 3000 to 3999 for advanced ACLs.
An ACL works as a stateless firewall. While a stateful firewall examines the contents of network packets, a stateless firewall only checks if the packets follow the defined security rules. ACLs are tables containing access rules found on network interfaces such as routers and switches.
The network ACL has outbound rules (100 and 110) that allow outbound HTTP and HTTPS traffic out of the subnet. There's a corresponding inbound rule that enables responses to that outbound traffic (inbound rule 140, which covers ephemeral ports 32768-65535).
acl-num Access list to which all commands entered from access list configuration mode apply, using a numeric identifier. For extended access lists, the valid range is 100 to 199.
Using numbered ACLs is an effective method for determining the ACL type on smaller networks with more homogeneously defined traffic. However, a number does not provide information about the purpose of the ACL. For this reason, starting with Cisco IOS Release 11.2, a name can be used to identify a Cisco ACL.
Standard access lists control traffic by comparing the source address of packets to the addresses configured in the access list. In all software releases, the access list number for the standard IP access lists can be anything from 1 to 99.
There are also configuration differences between the numbered and named ACLs. The foremost difference is the global command used by named ACLs places the user in a named IP access list sub mode under which matching and actions permit or deny logic are configured.
A standard ACL allows or denies traffic access based on the source IP address, while an extended access control list can filter packets with a higher degree of specification. It can determine the types of traffic it allows or blocks beyond just the IP address to include TCP, ICMP, and UDP, for example.
