Atypical squamous cells that may or may not be HSIL (ASC-H). ... Atypical glandular cells (AGC). ... Cancer.
With cervical cancer, you may notice discharge that is foul-smelling and pink, brown or bloody in colour. Sometimes, the discharge may include chunks of tissue or necrotic material as a result of infection of the tumours, creating a foul smelling vaginal discharge.
Risk factors for developing bumps on the cervix include: taking birth control pills that contain estrogen. having a family history of fibroids, polyps, cysts, or cervical cancer. experiencing inflammation of the cervix due to infections such as HPV, herpes, or yeast infections.
There is only two to five percent of the women who have a pap smear that has results come back abnormal. If you happen to fall into that group, you may be a bit nervous. This information will help you understand what it means to get an 'abnormal' test result on your pap smear.
ASC-US is the most common abnormal Pap test result. ASC-US stands for atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. “Squamous” refers to the type of cells that make up the tissue that covers the cervix. LSIL—This means that the cervical cells show changes that are mildly abnormal.
If the surface of the cervix becomes irritated and blanketed with small red dots, it's known as strawberry cervix. The red dots are actually tiny capillary hemorrhages (punctate hemorrhages). When this occurs on the cervix, the medical term is “colpitis macularis.”
Class V usually meant cancer. Unfortunately, this class system led to confusion regarding what "number" pap smear a woman had and what that really meant. Recently, a new system for pap smear classification called the Bethesda System has been introduced.
Most of the abnormal cells found during a Pap test are the result of a cervical or vaginal infection and are not cancerous. Abnormal Pap tests are very common. In fact, of the 3 million women with abnormal Pap tests each year, less than 1% (13,240 cases) will be diagnosed with cervical cancer.
An abnormal result means that cell changes were found on your cervix. This usually does not mean that you have cervical cancer. Abnormal changes on your cervix are likely caused by HPV. The changes may be minor (low-grade) or serious (high-grade).
