Hi, Im Tasos with RF elements and in todays episode of Inside Wireless, well talk about link budget. When designing any kind of wireless link, a good place to start is with a link budget equation. It gives you a fairly accurate estimate of the link performance based on the hardware you want to use. Before we go to the topic, if you enjoy our videos, like, comment, and consider subscribing to our channel. This is a link budget equation. It essentially calculates the strength of the signal on the receiver side considering three main components - the power transmitting radio can deliver, the gain of both antennas, and any loss that occurs during the transfer. To figure out whether a wireless link will deliver the data throughput were looking for, you need to know the power of the signal the receiver side will sees - PRX. Starting at the transmitter side, the radio uses some output power - PTX. It feeds that signal into an antenna its connected to - with a specific gain - GTX. The an

Link budget analysis accounts for all gains and losses in the communication link. Some factors and design choices, such as propagation path length, signal polarization, and antenna feed cable, degrade signal quality, while others, such as the power amplifier and antenna size, can increase transmitted signal strength.
The 5G link budget is an accounting of the transmitted power, along with all the gains and losses. it is used to calculate the received signal level at the the receiver handset (UE).
A communication link budget is a way of accounting for all gains and losses in a communication system from transmitter output power to the power seen by the receiver. By knowing all the losses and gain in our communication system, we can predict how reliably the signal can be received.
A fade margin of 10 dB is an absolute minimum. This would only be acceptable for links less than 3 miles or so. Up to 5 miles should have at least a 15 dB fade margin, and links greater than that should be higher. A fade margin of 25 dB is recommended for links greater than 5 miles.
(Link margin is dictated by the link margin policy or requirements.) A simple link budgeting approach assumes link parameters to be deterministic values typically adopted a rule-of-thumb policy of 3 dB link margin. This policy works for most S- and X-band links due to their insensitivity to weather effects.
A simple link budget equation looks like this: Received power (dBm) = transmitted power (dBm) + gains (dB) − losses (dB)
A proper set amplifier, quality wiring, minimum number of intermediate connections and other good practices will provide a high Margin Link that will ensure your installation against future signal losses.
The level of received power in excess of that required for a specified minimum level of system performance is referred to as the fade margin. So called, because it provides a margin of safety in the event of a temporary attenuation or fading of the received signal power.
The fading margin describes the excess amount of power that a link budget has to provide to counteract fading events due to multipath propagation. It is in the interest of the radio engineer to reduce the required excess power to optimise a radio link.
11.1. Link budget is a commonly used metric to evaluate the coverage of a cellular system in the downlink or uplink. In order to calculate the link budget, one must account for all gains and losses from the transmitter to the receiver over the air-interface.
