The Peer Review Process: What to Expect Step 1 Submission. Step 2 Peer Review: Research and Special Articles. Step 2a Statistical Review. Step 3 Revisions. It is recommended that authors submit revised manuscripts within six months.
Do Justify your recommendation with concrete evidence and specific examples. Be specific so the authors know what they need to do to improve. Be thorough. This might be the only time you read the manuscript. Be professional and respectful. Remember to say what you liked about the manuscript!
Your review should be clear, constructive and consistent. Clarity is important because authors will not be able to respond to your concerns if they dont fully understand what they are. Reviews are most helpful if they dont just criticise, but also make constructive suggestions for how concerns may be resolved.
We should all abide by the Golden Rule of Reviewing: Review for others as you would have others review for you.
The Introduction presents the topic and identifies the purpose of the study, the Materials and Methods section tells what the author did to address that purpose, and the Results section presents what was observed. The Discussion (the moral of the story) puts the study in perspective.
The Donts of Peer Review Dont make any personal reference to the authors and avoid exclamation points or an emotional style. Peer review is not an emotional process. Dont say things like, I dont believe it and I find this unconvincing. I find these results underwhelming or trivial or not important.
Write a clear and constructive review Open your review with the most important commentsa summarization of the research and your impression of the research. Make sure to include feedback on the strengths, as well as the weaknesses, of the manuscript. Examples and explanations of those should consume most of the review.
Format Your Document in a Standard Way. Peer review feedback is most easily digested and understood by both editors and authors when it arrives in a clear, logical format. Most commonly the format is (1) Summary, (2) Decision, (3) Major Concerns, and (4) Minor Concerns (see also Structure Diagram above).
Summarize what youve noticed about your co-workers performance. Mention areas of improvement youve noticed and highlight areas you hope you see their work on in the future. Dont beat around the bush with your answers during peer reviews. Ensure your answers are clear, concise, and easy to understand.
Good peer reviewers look for various aspects of the manuscript that they deem necessary for publication. For all research articles, usually, three aspects must be satisfied: originality, importance of the work to the readers, and scientific reliability.
