What a book proposal should contain 1) Header. 2) A brief synopsis of the book. 3) Longer synopsis of the book, if you feel it is necessary. 4) Chapter breakdown. 5) Sample chapter (some editors will not require this) 6) Book details. 7) About the author/biography. 8) Platform/audience.
A book hook is a statement or question designed to generate immediate curiosity and make the reader desire to know more about a book.
Start the proposal with an overview. Identify the target audience. Write an author bio. Research nonfiction comp titles. Create a marketing plan. Include a chapter outline of your book. Provide sample chapters from your manuscript. Finish with your writing timeline.
Single space. Dont put spaces between paragraphs unless youre deliberately drawing emphasis or flagging a change of point of view, topic, or time period etc. Spaces between grafs will look like a blog not a published book. They also make it harder for the reader to get into the flow of the story.
In your book proposal, the chapter outline is where you reveal your books shape: how it unfolds for the reader, chapter by chapter. It is one of the five key components of your nonfiction book proposal. (The other four are the overview, author biography, marketing/platform, and sample chapters.)
A hook is what grabs the reader and pulls them into your book; it is the unique premise of the story. It is specific it couldnt also apply to a hundred other novels and it offers just enough to invest you in the narrative, which is usually the inciting incident and story goal.
How To Write A Hook Startle The Reader With Your First Line. Start With Action. Form An Emotional Connection. Begin At A Life-Changing Moment. Create Intrigue About The Characters. Start At A Moment Of Confusion. Draw In The Reader With A Strong Voice. Introduce Something Ominous.
One way to start writing your hook is to jot down some sentences about the main plot or topic of your book and the main characters (fiction) or people and ideas (nonfiction). Search for a few strong words that capture the theme and conflict in your story or message and build from there.
